Some Days, Breathing Alone Is Not Enough to Survive Life

  The rain had fallen all through the night. Not the soft kind that sings gently on rooftops and disappears by morning, but the heavy African kind,  stubborn, loud, and relentless. The kind that leaves roads wounded by dawn and turns ordinary movement into negotiation. By morning, the city looked tired. Brown water rested inside potholes like small ponds. Mud stretched across the roadside in uneven patches. Cars moved carefully, slowly, each tire dragging through wet earth with resistance. The air carried that familiar scent of rain-soaked dust and concrete, earthy, calm, but heavy. I had just dropped my daughter off at school and was driving home through the aftermath of the storm when a thought quietly entered my mind and refused to leave.
